I haven't flown with a firearm since the late 90s. My mother passed away in July and I inherited a couple of pieces.
Anyone here fly with weaponry since 9/11? (Guess what day I'm flying back....and the first 2 guesses don't count.)
I know I have to have a locking case, show the unloaded weapon to the ticket agent, fill out the form, lock the form in the case in front of the agent. I've been on American Airlines website.
I'm not flying any ammo. I can get that here.
Any new wrinkles they don't tell you about up front?

You may have to go the the TSA office and show that the weapons are unloaded as well. Good luck I haven't traveled since 9-11.
Sure you might get lost, But don't worry you're biodegradable!

Sorry to hear about your mom, Crickett.
Have you considered just shipping the firearms, with some insurance of course? Airport lines and procedures are silly enough. I can't imagine trying to travel with a weapon.

When my Dad passed a few years back, he left me several guns. I took them to a UPS store, packed 'em, insured 'm and shipped 'em across country. No problems.

Shipping the handgun into California is a pain in the backside. I asked a gun shop locally and nearly died from the sticker shock. They charge an arm and a leg to do the paperwork. I will check into shipping UPS. They may have some restrictions and my luck my box would get searched and seized.
Thanks for the kind words about my mom. She's happy now. She and Dad are somewhere arguing and teasing each other. Update: GAH! What a maze. Nothing is clear at UPS. Do I ship it to myself or not? Does it have to go to a gun shop or not? I think I'll fly them.

i fly souhwest and have never had a problem with flying with a weapon. if its aseembled you have to have a bolt lock, trigger lock, or slide style cable lock. i usually just dissaemble them, delcare them at the baggage claim, theyll pull you to the side have you sign a waiver and its all good.

if they are handguns you may have to do it through a gun dealer adn do the proper paperwork to register them inyour name as well as the 10 day waiting period. yeah I know but it is california.

If they are handguns and inherited/gifted from an intrafamiliar transfer, you have 10 days to register them through the CA DOJ. $19 fee each.
You can fly with them still, but there are certain requirements and I hear the TSA might ransack your luggage just because.
You can mail firearms to an ffl or ffl holding gunsmith. I have been known to just take them apart and ship them to myself as "machine parts", but the legality of this is questionable on a federal level.

Who are/were you planning to fly with? Each airline has its own regulations about carrying firearms in the baggage hold. Whatever you do, DO NOT SHIP via UPS or FEDEX, etc. Much more hassle than its worth, if they even allow it anymore.
The standard Postal Service allows you to ship rifles and shotguns via mail, but not handguns. You are best either a) flying with airline or b) driving.
