Nice job man! I have the same set up in both the waggy and pokey. I love it. When I put the amp and sub in the inside body cavity I insulated the outside fenders pretty good but.....when it's cranked up it's a freaking low rider. When I'm at a stop light people are looking around with some nasty looks on there faces. Haha! No way do they think it's an old fart in a jacked up waggy so they just keep looking around like they'd like to kick someones ass. Naturally, when they look at me with the outer panels vibrating to hell...I start looking around like I'm just as pissed off as they are. then I shut it down with the remote. haha! so far, nobody has kicked me out of town.

i did something similar to the custom jeep in the links. except i used one 12" solo-baric in a fiberglassed downfire box whhich bolts down using the holes that the backseat normally would. and then i made a locking trunk that hinges on the back of the box and locks via the tail gate that i welded a lip on to slip over the trunk when closed. don't have any pictures of it but it pounds pretty hard. if anyones interested in the box i may have to build a new one cause i dont know if it will still fit when i get my jeep back from being line-xed.....thomas

Great work, that's the place to have it. It gives you a very related right hip.
I currently have the stock stereo with the sub in the console (which has been better than any stock stereo I've had) and I've had a box w/2 Kicker 8" and the amp mounted to the box, but the need for supplys has put that out to pasture. Soon I'll be replacing the sub with one of the Kickers but I'm more concerned with the head unit and MP3 compatability.
I think I'm going to go to Marine units with a flip cover that can be sealed and mounted to the dash opening. Since I have a small Sony 1G MP3, I'm gonna add a mount on the inside of the smoke plastic cover that allows the display to be seen.
http://www.overtons.com/modperl/overtons/detail/pdetail2.cgi?r=detail_view&item_num=25838&fcat=2L6
I'm thinking of mounting the cover inverted. So it can be opened in the rain with less moisture getting to the unit.

I have the same storage issues. A TJ doesn't have a whole lotta room when you need the back seat for the rug rats.
I was planning on lifting by back seat 2 inches and then building a box to fit under the seat that will house either 2 eights or one 12" JL sub.
I do like your console idea though. I have thought of that several times, but like you space is an issue.

that is sick buddy. where the hell does a sub go w/o being in the way?
i was debating about carving out the back seat.. just air would be a problem and i'm sure comfortablility would be a zero.

amazing job, where are the air holes for the subs to breath?
i just bought a tj, recently owneed a yj and drove the piss out of it.
..anyways, having installed a sub into the core console, does it rattle the shit out of your seat?
there is a winch remote/control centre installed in the consol.
i'm thinking whether or not to install a sub ..and follow the wires of the winch to the battery.
..would that cause problems?

Has anyone tried the JL audio stealth box? I have looked all over the net for information and I can't even find a price for it!! It seems like a good idea for YJ’s and with JL you know it will be high quality, but from what I have seen from the pics. of it on the website it seems like it is kinda balky, looks like it would get in the way of the shifter or you hand one.

I like the console peteyg did as well... Will it work with a YJ console?

So I take it that this is custom. I really like the looks of it. What materials did you use to build it? I was thinking about MDF and covering it in something that would resist water much like you did but I'm always open to suggestions.

very good point, that never even crossed my mind... how would you start to counter act that problem? Maybe if the magnet is almost centered in the console, the few inches between that and the added thickness of the console would be enough to keep you safe.

I installed a new stereo in the TJ yesterday, since I killed my wal-mart cheapo in less than 3 months. This time I got a nice Pioneer head unit. It sounded really good, but it was seriously lacking in anything resembling bass. I have always hated the lame tinny sound of the stereo, and have longed for a real sub woofer. Unfortunately, there is always that darn pesky space issue. Since mine is a trail rig, all of my usable storage space is, well, used. So, the question became, where to install a sub?
I decided today that the answer is: In the center console.
Now, this meant that I had to give up the center console as a storage space, but I decided it was worth it. I can store my sun screen somewhere else. So, with my decision made, I trucked on down to my favorite retailer (Wally-World!) and picked up a nice Sony xPlode 10" sub and a cheapo 200W amp. I got both for a grand total of $110. Now all I had to do was make them work. I was actually a little doubtful that I could get the sub to fire well in that enclosed space, but we;ll get to that in a bit.
The new sub:

The new amp:

So, the first thing I did was remove the center console and cut a hole for the 10" sub in the side using the template provided. I cleaned up the hole a bit before I installed the sub.

I had to trim the inside of the console enclosure a bit in order to fit the large magnet.

The view from the top. As you can see, the sub pretty much fills the console.

Then I test-fit the console to see how it all fit together.

Then I started on the wiring for the amp. I decided to to install the amp against the kickwall on the passenger side. I chose this location for several reasons. First, it had very convenient access to the stereo wiring and battery. Second, it wasn't in the way of anything, and third, it had easy access to the center console. Finally, there just wasn't anywhere else to put it.
First, I ran a power lead through the firewall and tied it into the battery junction box. Always remember to use a grommet, especially for leads that are directly attached to the battery.

Then I ran all of the wiring to the installation location. The amp ground is screwed directly into the floor, which I ground to bare metal. The ground is within a foot of the amp. There is no motor noise at all.

Then I mounted the amp.

Here's the final installation. Overall, I am VERY happy with the results. The trimming I did in the inside of the console acted to port the box, and the sub fires HARD. It is very good. I finally have bass.

This took about 4 hours, and was well worth the effort. The stereo sounds absolutely awesome. It won't be winning any competitions or anything, but boy am I happy.

The seat belt only rubs the outer trim. It's not really an issue.
And yeah, I know, it's kinda blingy, but I've been wanting to do something like this for a long time, and today was the day. Good tunes are worth the ribbing I know I'll get.

WTF?
why the console?
they make a lil sub thing that could have gone under your seat
but not that cheap
I saw one that installs under the back seat, but it actually sits outsite between the frame rails and ports into the vehicle. They did extensive modification to the tub in order to fit that thing in there. I don't have room under the Jeep, either, and I for sure would kill it if it was outside. Also, I use the space under the back seat to hold my toolkit. So...no room there. The other thing I was going for is CHEAP. Total, I think I have less than $300 into the entire system that's in there, including the Pioneer speakers in the soundbar and dash that I put in way back.
Additionally, I don't have any room behind the back seat, because I have a hide-a-trunk, and it is FULL of all my trail gear, so there's no room there. I'm happy with it. My Jeep goes boom now, and I only compromised a little.
The console is the only place to do a clean install. I would have preferred an 8" sub, but Wal-Mart didn't have any. I bought Sony out of necessity, being in the "beggars and choosers" category. Besides, all you Sony haters are going a little overboard. I like Sony electronics. I've been using the for years with no issues. And it's a trail rig with a 40-series flowmaster and Krawlers. Whatever imperfections may be present in the sound system will not be evident to me.

I have been considering replacing the stock sub im my box with a higher quality sub and amp.
Honestly, I wasn't sure what to expect. I thought it was going to wash out being in a space that small, but it works fine. I figured that any bass I got was going to be better than what I had, so I was willing to take a chance on it. I think having the back cut out to accomodate the magnet ported it enough to let it breathe. Also, my stereo has an option to drive the sub in reverse, and that seems to sound better. Granted, it doesn't sound as good as the dual 10" box I have in my bmw, but that wasn't my goal.

Just a side note to add here:
After playing around with it for a while, I found that the limitation to the system is the console door. It doesn't seal well, and shakes and rattles and lets too much air pass. It really washed it out at higher volumes (above half). I played around with it quite a bit and finally used weather stripping to seal it up. That made a world of difference. Then I taped up the whole door surround, and that REALLY made a difference. It's not the best solution, by far, but I'm still really happy. Really, really happy. This rocks

Heh, the TJ is way, way different than when I put the sub in. The Krawlers seem almost mild...
But, since this got dragged back up, I thought I'd give an update.
The biggest issue I have had is keeping the center console lid sealed. I stuffed a bunch of rags and things in there and it seemed to work well. With the leaky top and stupid-loud flowmaster, I can't really HEAR the bass at anything above 60, but I can feel it, so it works out pretty well. When doing low-speed crawling and in camp, it sounds awesome.

Have you done anything to protect the head unit from dust? Are you listening to CD's, or satellite? I've just got a simple single disc player in the dash, and I don't dare put any disc I value in their anymore...not sure I'll get it back! I've got a decent Pioneer single disc unit laying around from a Blazer I used to have. If I thought I could protect it for any decent amount of time, I'd drop it in.
Tom
Dust is for sure an issue. I thought about wrapping the head unit behind the dash, but I thought I might have heating issues. This is the type of unit that flips down to insert the cd, so maybe that'll afford SOME protection. I'm not too hopeful, though. It is an XM-ready unit, so I might just suck it up and keep the XM subscription and go that route.
I also have 3-way 6x8 pioneer speakers in the soundbar, and 6" pioneer 2-ways in the dash. After fiddling with the eq a bit, I think I have it sounding pretty good. I can hear it above the Krawlers, which is a plus.

I use that space for tool storage. It's not an option for me. That's the biggest problem with such a small space. I can EITHER have a really kickin' system with real enclosures and all that, or I can have a trail rig with a full load-out. There isn't room for both, though. The other issue is that I have to keep my back seat, for family and the dog. If I could go to a two-seater, that would open up all kinds of possibilities. It'll be several years before that becomes an option, though.

That's fine for someone who can use the storage space to put the bass tube in. However, this is a trail rig, with everything that a trail rig has to carry. Where would you suggest it go? I can't use the room behind the seat, since I use that for my trail supplies. I can't put it on top of the add-a-trunk; that's where the High Lift goes. I can't put it on the floor in the back; I have to have a back seat for family and the dog. I can't put anything under the back seat; that's where I carry my toolbox. Believe me, if I could have used a ready made system, I would have. I would have GREATLY preferred a sub box, but it was not to be. It will always be a trail rig first, and everything else will be an afterthought.
Edit: Just to give you an idea of what goes behind the back seat, here's what I carry back there, always:

No room for a bass tube.

JL Audio makes some great speakers. The only downside to it I can think of is that if it get wet it might start of fall apart. MDF does not like water. Also, the console part is very small. Might eb better off building one yourself. From what I rememebr (the JL Audio box has been out for years) is that it was expensive.

Sort of a related question: The 6x9 in my soundbar on the driver's side, keeps cutting in and out, and I haven't been able to find any wiring issues. Maybe the speaker is bad? Could it be shorting out if it's in contact with the metal housing of the soundbar? I'm perplexed.

Maybe you could pop rivet in a little false bottom into the console above the top of the sub, and at least put like sunglasses, tire deflators and stuff like that in it....
I paid $200 for a 600w Crunch amp and a 10" Black Max sub....I've also got some 6x9 Bazookas in those plastic boxes that sit between the wheel well and roll bar. I need something up front and my head unit has recently succumbed to dirt and trail shock....

they make a lil sub thing that could have gone under your seat
but not that cheap
I've been using the for years with no issues. And it's a trail rig with a 40-series flowmaster and Krawlers. Whatever imperfections may be present in the sound system will not be evident to me.
I've heard lots of bad things about Sony's stuff from my roommate, whos one of those weird car audio people, thats all. Guess it won't matter in the end, (unless it blows )
And hey, crank it up loud enough there and ya got an in seat back massager.

Nice work, finding good space in a factory configuration is WORK!!!
I went a different route with my project rig...I didn't plan on a seat in the rear so I had space to work with. Decided to fab a lock box that could double as a sitting area (in a pinch, as it's too high for extended use).

I spent about $20 on the materials, plus about $40 on Dynamat to eliminate rattling.I'll probably rig up a speaker cloth screen to cover the front with that will help with the 'disguise' of the setup...

Nice looking job, Pete! All I've been running on are some aftermarket 4x6's (or whatever the stock YJ dash size is) since someone stole the 6x9's and their boxes out of the back...oh, about 5-6yrs ago.

Anybody know about the "underseat box"? Does this go under the back seat or under one of the front seats?

Ugh. Sony. Rockford Fosgate is where its at. I got 2 6x9s and 4x6s RF speakers powered by an old school punch 180 and a 12" HE2 RF Sub powered by a badass Punch 360 in my truck. It sets off car alarms; because, thats what all the cool kids do.

Honestly, I'd try to come up with something to put under the rear seat. It would make a great seal, no one would see it, and you'd still be able to use the center console. But, as long as it hits it's good.

Heh, in my truck I got a crappy 8" sub under the passenger seat that wired to my punch 360; I have a switch under the steering column to turn it on and off. The look I get every time I kick that thing on from whoever the lucky lady is never gets old.

Petey...thanks for posting and responding on www.4bangerjp.com as well.
I used the 8" Sony in my new Tuffy console that has slots. I like the placement of your amp and I think I will copy so I can turn my back into a trunk as well. I'll be a little worried about the passenger kicking it, but probalby won't happen.
Here is a picture of my sub installed....had to do a little drilling through the steel.

Here's the inside of the console...more drilling (two 1" holes...one here and one down on the side!!) so I could accomodate my iPod cable that runs to the iPod adapter under my seat.

All controlled from my new Alpine head (as soon as I get an amp hooked up)

I like it. Nice clean install. Good work. (I wonder if all that vibration directed towards your crotch will make the trail,...ummm.. more "exciting!")
