If you're not being sarcastic....

Last time I ran the trail we saw a big old full size Dodge truck. I looked around it for the usual tree evidence on the bumpers and back of the bed, but he got through clean. He had just installed an Atlas and said that the reason he was getting through was front drive only in the tight spots. Wink

Your YJ isn't. Couple of lock-right's, some gears, and a little lift and 33's and you'd be set.

I'll bring a rig...not sure which one, but I'll have one

You will NOT want a fullsize on this run. It will be a midsize by the time you are done.........

Eh...I think it would be fine. There are some tight spots, but I've seen full size rigs go through there.

By peteyg - 3/18/2006 8:59:33 AM
Don, you'd probably be ok, but there are some very tight spots on the Dusy that will take some finesse.

Finesse???
Damn I guess that leaves me out then.
I guess I could just take my bike then,no finesse required....Tongue

So, are the Jeeps running with the Broncos - same trip, or do you all want your own run? I want to come along, its just hard for me to plan that far ahead. Wink Who knows what I'll break between now and then!

Actually every year JA/BA has a big run that gets planned but only one really cool guy has made both events so far...well, Scotty was AT both events, but riding bitch doesnt count.
I am planning to go. I want to go to the Sturgis rally as well, but these 2 events might be too close together

I'm bringing my Jeep on my Bronco run.......LOL.

This has been a great trip every year we do it. I expect nothing less this year. I could care less what you drive. Bring it!

Ok, I'm gettin a little antseeee here.

I'm gonna make this, hell or high water. I'll be there on my friggin Mt. Bike if something happens to my rig.

Just wantin to revive this thread.

My vote goes for mid aug. The mosquitos will be gone and the biting flys won't be to bad.
By Scotty - 5/23/2006 12:36:38 PM
I will be there if the trail is open. Central Sierras have received record snowfall this year, so we will have to play this by ear.

Oh, and unless I come into a lot of money in a hurry, it looks like I will be riding bitch again. I just don't have the time to finish the Scrambler in time for this. And testing a freshly built rig over 30mi of Rubicon like terrain is not my idea of a good one.
By ScottP66CJ - 5/24/2006 11:52:07 PM
OK guys. I have not done Dusy before. When in August are you planning on going? I would like to know if the timing is right for me to go.

I don't know how you guys do it! I took a trip to Colorado three years ago and spent three days in the hospital. I found that my body does not like the elevation. I couldn't imagine using a high lift jack or getting out to winch, I'd have to stop every 5 seconds, take a puff of oxygen, drink 12 ounces of water, use my inhaler, then continue. I guess the ticket would be to build a rig thats unstoppable, equip it with oxygen and a hot nurse Evil Hmmmmmm....

I was the camera bitch last year taking pics of guys going up Chicken Rock. Then I realized I had to walk up it myself. I had to stop 4 times before the top to catch my breath. Not fun.

I used to work in the ansel adams wilderness in the trail crew just north of the Dusy. Ansel adams is on the southern border of Yosemite and covers the north fork of the san joaquin river. I never really went below 7k all summer. Even so, when I got above 9500 ft I got real slow in the head and body.

You can't use a chain saw or any other power equipment in a wilderness area. I was an avid Mt biker at the time and I'd still knock ass holes of their bikes and take their front wheel, give them a citation and tell them where the ranger station is and when they can get their wheel back. If anybody wanted to play games and I couldn't do something about it, I'd radio the sherif and Let them play games with a big man with a big gun.

I used a 7 foot long cross cut saw to cut trees and carried a shovel for water bars along with some other gear for small trees/brush and some stuff to keep the cross cut saw from binding. Most of the time I had to carry a 40lb backpack with everything like cloths, food, sleeping bag ect. We were lucky to have a packer and mules once in a while. One girl and I were in such good shape by the time they got mules, that we would race ahead of the mules and just clear the trail before the mules could even catch-up. Talk about addicted to endorfans. We would just work from sun up to sun down regardless of only getting paid 8 hours. If I wasn't working and the sun was still up, I'd be hikin, joggin, or climbing something. We usually cleared 130-150 miles of trail in 3 months.

It's hard work. It's probably a lot like working construction, but you don't get a work truck. I used to chant montras in my head or just go: Ohh-wee-ohh... Ohhuhh... like in the wizard of oz in my head over and over. You just need to keep a real SLOW and steady pace, and stop before you get into trouble. Everything needs to slow down. You can't lift your head to fast or you will exhaust your oxygen supply. It's like moving through water. Everything just moves different.

I probably did so well because I was alway good at pacing myself. Even when I was in great shape from working for most of the season, I still would need to stop and let the bongo drums quiet down in my head.

By Elusive - 5/25/2006 10:05:22 AM
hangovers are a rel bitch up there....
the only real problm I had was trying to walk uphill to a secluded spot for my morning business...You have a turle head poking out and your climbing a 30% grade with no O2....well.. it's uncomfortable.
I will be there this year. I don't care if I have to go alone, last years trip was an epic time that I will never forget.

I have been watching the weather up there and they have been having warm temps and rain... that should melt the snow pretty quickly

I'm jealous of you guys, I am heading up that way tomorrow with my wife. We will be staying at Shaver Lake with some friends in their cabin. Yes, I am taking the Jeep, problem is that we are the only ones with a Jeep, I will have the only rig. I really want to do Dusy but I won't do it by myself. I plan on runnng a bunch of the short trails, strawberry and mirror lake, brewer lake, bald mountain, etc. I will be up there Wednesday - Monday. I will post up when I get back here and let you all know how the weather was. Elusive is right, they have been having some warm weather.

I don't think much is open up there this year yet. CHeck the Frenso 4x4 club webpage for what is currently open.

We took a full sized Blazer through there a few years back. and unless it's changed tons.....forget the ull sized. That thing looked like a Voltzwagon bus when it came out the top end. The owner sold it cheap for parts when he got home. And there are no go arounds in the tight spots. Even if you fit between the trees, they have huge roots that rock you to one side when passing through them. Kieser pass is like 11K BTW.Smile

If you have a carb on your rig, I hope you know how to tune it for altitude. As Bud said, it's up there. BTW, one of the Dehesan's said her Dr. told her to take Advil for altitude headaches.
By HopeRocks - 6/28/2006 11:38:44 AM
While I was down on power, my 302 with an mc2100 ran fine last year. No real issues at all. I did do a complete tune up etc before I left.
By bob91yj - 6/28/2006 11:54:35 AM
Speaking of carbs, I think we got Wanda's rig dialed in. Nice YJ, damn shame it's the 4.2.

Was it a 2100? Or and 2150? The 2150 has an altitude thingie on it. Either one is a darned good carb though. I've had my 2100 up pretty high with no problema whatsoever.

We had three rigs with carbs. All with the MC2100 and none of them had any issues last year. Morning start ups were interesting though.

By CJN8 - 7/14/2006 6:14:14 AM
I was just up at Shaver Lake the weekend of the 4th, I was able to piggy back on some of the trails with one of the members of the Fresno Four Wheelers (they were still closed), I believe his name was Bart, I helped clear some down trees to make the trails passable again. Yeah, their was quite a bit of snow still left. What a great area up there, I would love to go back and hit dusy.

Actually, Kaiser Pass is 9,184' and the highest point on the trail is
just to the southeast of that and it's just over 10,000'.

Reality Check.

The Jeeps OBDII fuel injection FURRY is not going to be solved by aug, let alone finnishing my suspension, wiring the winch, tire carrier, shifter boots, blahba-de-bla. ARRG!

I will actually wheel my rig someday. My shop is finnally peaceful and quiet again now that all the clepto's and crack heads are gone. We changed the locks and I put barbed wire up, so it's pretty cozy once inside. Like that helps now that it's 100 million degrees behind my shop.

So, I said it before and I'm not joking, I'll be kickin the pedal power. I just need a ride to the trailhead, a sag wagon and a ride home. Actually I've wanted to do this for 12 years now. I saw the Dusy on a map while I was living in the Minerates District with my grandmother over the summers at the age of 13. I just didn't know it had a name. Haha

This will be good for me. I did a lot of riding over the winter but tappered off once it got hot. I know that if I train well for the next month that I can have fun and not be hurtin.

You planning training at elevation for this??? Just want to make sure you know that this trail is around 10K in elevation and tops 11K in some spots. You will likely make better time that the rigs do anyway, but just want to make sure you'll be okay.
By Carl Case - 7/17/2006 11:04:42 PM
Ya Scotty I know what I'm in for. I ain't affriad. My ass is the one thing that needs conditioning the most. I'll be in the saddle a lot.

I'm thinking about driving my truck to the trailhead. So all I need is a sag wagon for my gear.
By Scotty - 7/17/2006 11:51:57 PM
I'm sure we could figure that out for ya Carl. I doubt you will have that much gear anyway.
By ltcjeep - 7/18/2006 12:15:16 AM
Carl, there will be probably 4 to 6 rigs on this run, from all the interest shown.

You just might need a treasure map to remember what you put in which rigBig Smile
I am pretty sure we could figure it out, to the trail and back from the trail will probably be the hardest with you and you're bike
you might just have to hang on somewhere.

Easily... Yeah right. I might just barely get it done in the nick of time. I won't have time to test run it or anything. A month is a long time, but I only have the weekends and nights to work on it.

First of all, I really... really like to sleep. I'm not interested in rushing around my shop at night, loosing sleep and gettin hurt.

Second, I'm not interested if frying my nads off during the day over the weekend.

Instead, I can ride my bike in the mountains in the cool mornings and nights. That sounds better to me.

I'm not giving up on the jeep. I'll still chug away at it. Riding this trail with over nighters and a sag wagon is a dream come true.

ok, it's official. I will NOT be able to make the Dusy run this year. Woohoo!

The reason why I'm excited about this is because I finally won my custody battle for my son, and he comes to live with us in about a week. His new school starts the week that we were going to the Dusy, and I just can't up and take off that week, so.....

Bud

Actually, Kaiser Pass is 9,184' and the highest point on the trail is
just to the southeast of that and it's just over 10,000'.
