The Tierra Del Sol 4x4 Desert Safari has been officially unofficially chosen to get the JA crew together.
If you've never been to the TDS Desert Safari, you owe it to yourself to see it at least once. The gang at TDS put on a hell of an event, and donate their time and $$$ to land use issues.
I suspect that there will be enough West coasters there that there should be plenty of open seats for anyone that wants to fly in.
West Coaster's, if you have open seats, or can put some one up at your camp for the weekend, post up what you have available.
I suspect that there will be several different camps, rather than one large JA camp. I'm sure Machelle and I will be in the DJR/Get Ugly! camp at Truckhaven. Plan on the meet/greet Friday night at 7PM.
I'll see if I can get it started...
I can host 1-2 people, provide camping supplies, can pick up/drop off at the San Diego Airport.
Camping is primitive, essentially a flat spot in the desert.

Just PM Jeff to see what would be a good place to Hook up with him and fly in and go to TDS this year, we talked about me flying out when he was here so I am going to start saving now and get flight out for the event if flight are cheap enough this far in advance

Jeeze, after last year with Mike don't you think I've done enough.

Not sure if I will have any room this year. Think the wifie wants to tag along.

Yeah like I'd let that happen. Definitely looking forward to trying out those perty new seats I won last year. Gotta get them installed for sure.
So what's the consenus for the adult camp site this year? Our old site in Truckhaven proper off of North Marina Drive? Or last years site? As of right now the rough plan for us is to drive out thursday night as ususual

I thought those seats went in the Saturday after the LAST TDS. What you waitin' on?
And I definately vote for N. Marina Drive. It seems warmer over there and I just like the area.

ok, so North Marina it is. Still have the old coordinates in my 60c. Haven't had much time to work on the YJ with the wedding, new job, etc. I've had a lot going on lately. I also wanted to wait to install them until i redid my cage, but thats gonna be a while off yet so I may as well just go ahead and put em in now

Having never been to the N. Marina site before, how far is it from there to the 'actual' TDS site? Not that it matters too incredibly much as I'll be trailering the YJ behind the RV, but I'm a lazy SOB and don't want to drive half an hour between the runs and "home"...

I'd say about 10-12 minutes give or take. The wheeling by the old spot (marina dr) is way better than what is over by the S-22, unless your Scott and you find the only spot to put your junk on its side!!!!!

Notching isn't very dangerous since you are usually "below ground" the notches are basicly holes in the ground, so you may flop over buy you are'nt rolling down a huge hill. Speaking of hills, which can be the most dangerous part of truck haven since there are a lot of hills to play around (thus truck haven hills). But if she is riding along its just as easy to take an alternate easier route so she isnt so freaked out.
Truck haven is a place for everyone to play from mild to wild, so we can watch or play.

I personally do not have any motorhome or pop up, I usually only have a tent or sleep in my jeep. One of my friends has a cab over camper/truck I may be able to barrow for the weekend, but the truck is his main transportation so I wouldnt count on that either. Maybe one of the other JA'ers can provide better accomidations.

The factor will be represented by myself and Scott's wife.
The stuff I do is not too scary. She can ride with me so you can go play. I don't have lockers so I can't get wild. (if she doesn't mind riding with my Miniature Pinscher.) Also, the Notches is a park and sit on the hood and watch everyone else get stupid situation. It's something that needs to be experienced to be believed. There's also another spot to go watch people try to hurt themselves. Todd fell over trying to climb a hill there.

Cricket beat me to it. My wife sort of falls into that category. But she trusts me and knows I know what I am doing so she generally doesn't freak out when I go to do something a bit on the gnarly side. Of course she also wants to drive my Heep this year so that should be interesting

The TDS M&G is at the same spot as in Wally's thread.....hill near old TDS site.
The N. Marina location we are refering to is for the J.A.A.C.
And Scramblerman, I've got a small 2-man tent.... and a leaky air mattress you can use when you visit TDS.

Dave, if nothing else comes through for you, I should have my enclosed trailer available, beats the crap out of a tent, especially if it gets windy. I can fix you up with most everything you'll need. I'm hoping to be out there Thursday night, but it may be Friday before I get there. I'll be camped in the Dust Junkies camp, a bit away from the feature attractions, but always a good time.

Bad news Is I am no longer coming out all that checking on flight crap was null and void as Crystal's Blank ZJ got in a fight with a Stump and lost SO I have to buy her a new Mini van that I am not allowed to drive she said that was a damper But trip was still in at that point and we are still shopping for the van
The Good News for Me but bad for my trip plans, Is I bought the clean K5 blazer that i was building for my brother in law today... But now I can't see me paying for a trip when I just bought on rig cash and still have another to buy
Blazer details are Brother in law picked up a clean 85K5 blazer and brought it to me It has a New gen 5 crate 350 in it and a 465/208 and baby tires on it when it showed up... since then I have rebuilt and installed 3/4 ton axle in the 8lug Dana 44/14bolt rear and new 6" lift
H2 aluminum 17 wheels X 5 and then 4 brand new 35x12.50x17 BFG KM2 but all this time he ran out of play money so it was on hold waiting for Break lines and drive shafts.... and today its now mine

Wifey said thats a good one Crickett.
Man I can't wait!! Just hope I can get all my YJ projects done in time. With the new switch panel I decided it would be a good time and idea to go ahead and completely re-wire all of my accessories again. Hopefully one more solid day of wiring should do it. I've managed to eliminate a lot of my rats nest. Upgraded the Hellas to some 500 FFs with 130 watt bulbs in them, put the old 500s on the Dodge with some 100 Watt bulbs in em. Threw a fresh coat of paint on the dash while I had it all tore apart. Got the ARB Mini compressor installed and all hooked up. Still need to get a new inner axle seal for the Dana 30 and get that in. Went to Pick Your part for half price day this morning and grabbed another spare axle shaft from an ABS equipped XJ so it should have a 297 joint in it. Hopefully that will hold up to my lead foot a little better. Also still need to replace the u-joint on my front drive shaft and the one that let go in my last good spare axle shaft (prior to todays score anyway) so I have 2 spares per side as usual. Need to put the interior of the YJ back together, mount yet another ammo can, throw another couple coats of Scotch gaurd on my new seats, and of course the usual fluid checks and changes. Need to do oil and rear diff fluid change in the truck and get all the camping gear and such out and ready to go.
Man thats a lot to do in the 4 days I have off between now and our Thursday afternoon/evening departure for Truckhaven

ok. Finally found my Garmin 60c.
Here is the co-ordinates for our camp site:
N 33* 17.574'
W 116* 00.049'
We will be camping off the right side of North Marina Drive shortly past the housing development over by the old TDS main camp and close to the main notches.
The wife and I will be heading out Thursday afternoon/evening. I hope to be on the road by 4 pm. We will be staying until Sunday afternoon.
Keep an eye out for this camp sign:

should be nice and visible. even at night as I bought a solar powered spot light to aim at it from Harbor Freight.

Just finished marking the site in Google Earth. for some reason Google Earth is giving me slightly different co-ordinates than what my Garmin is giving me. But I know I marked the Garmin waypoint sitting at camp back in 05.
Anyway, here is the google earth image of the Adult camp site

Google Maps Link to the area:
http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=33.293079,-116.00003&z=16&t=h&hl=en
and the co-ordinates from Google Earth:
33°17'35.10"N
116° 0'0.01"W
So yeah, roughly about there

Mike, no worries. I plan to rope off a nice big area. I gotta install my new Yellow Top in the YJ tomorow morning. Did the grocery shopping this evening and got all the food prepped as best I could. Chili, Steaks, Lobster tail, some Carribean Jerk season shrimp skewers, mmm gonna be good stuff this year. Got most of the gear staged and ready already. gotta finish cleaning the coolers and pull the beer kegs out.
We will be heading out THursday afternoon. I plan to leave work at 3. and hopefully get loaded up and be on the road by 4

I've got almost everything done on the Jeep, the camper is ready, and I'll be getting fresh meats on the truck Thursday.

filled the YJ yesterday and got the new Optima installed. put the receiver rack on it. Shes ready to go. just gotta hook it up tomorow, disco the rear drive shaft and check the tire pressures. Loaded a bunch of Geocaches onto the gps last night at work (it was dead). Just came inside from loading the quad up (i need to have a buddy at work help me get the front end up on the toolbox since we found out last year wifey can't help me lift it) loaded some firewood under the tool box and checked the tire pressure on the tow rig. About to wipe a 4 gig memory card for the camera. one more day!!!!

Hey Scott, I'll join you on the geocaching. My stats are horrible. PM me the GC codes and I'll stash them in my iPhone app for Geocaching. Gotta remember batteries for the camera (and the camera...and use it). Let the landlady know I'll be gone and leave food for the cat. What to eat? I never feel like cooking out there and I'm not much of a sandwich fan. Dog lives on beef jerky while out there (probably why he likes wheelin'..only time he gets the good stuff.)

yeah I forgot to log my finds from last year, but as I was going thru I recognized a few we found last year and logged them. I pulled 50 caches. doubt you want all of them. I just went to geocacheing.com and did a search for cahces within a 5 mile radius of our camp site co-ordinates. loaded anything that looked interesting. figure it will give Chelsea and I something to do Friday while we wait for you all to get out there.
I'm lookin forward to our grub. Got some Chili for Friday night, prepped the meat with onion, garlic and seasoning already. threw some steak chunks in it too. Got some steaks, a Lobster tail and some Carribean jerk seasoned shrimp skewers with potatoes, Asparagus, onion and baby portabella mushrooms. for lunches we have sandwich stuff and some frozen burritos for manifold burritos. breakfast stuff includes pancakes, hashbrowns, eggs, bacon and pancakes. I also made a big batch of my pico de guilo (sp?) for snacks oh and some home made beef jerky in various flavors cause we got a Ronco for a wedding present

Hmmmmm frozen burritos in the manifold. Forgot about that. I'm also getting a vision of potatoes baking in the fire. Easy to keep and easy to fix and loaded with carbs. Stuff with cheese and a near perfect meal in a skin.
BTW....how long do you manifold the burritos?

RAINFALL TOTALS WITH THE FIRST WEAK SYSTEM SHOULD GENERALLY BE A TRACE TO A FEW HUNDREDTHS OF AN INCH TONIGHT INTO THURSDAY MORNING. LOCALLY GUSTY WINDS WILL DEVELOP LATE TONIGHT AND THURSDAY... MAINLY IN THE MOUNTAINS AND DESERTS.
THE SECOND STRONGER AND COLDER STORM APPROACHING FROM THE NORTHWEST WILL LIKELY BRING RAIN... MOUNTAIN SNOW AND GUSTY WINDS SATURDAY INTO SUNDAY. PRELIMINARY RAINFALL TOTALS RANGE FROM ABOUT HALF TO ONE INCH WEST OF THE MOUNTAINS WITH ABOUT A QUARTER TO HALF AN INCH IN THE DESERTS. HOWEVER... yeah I wrapped some small potatoes up in tinfoil to cook on the grill. 2 are wrapped with butter and kosher salt and pepper, two with olive oil and montreal steak seasoning. Just gonna toss em on the grill with the steaks.
As for the manifold burrito cook time. Not sure. never done it. Figure I'll toss em on when we take off on a run and see how they are doing when we stop I grabbed like 5 different kinds including a couple of breakfast burritos.

We had almost that exact same forecast for our trip last weekend, and we did get just a trace of rain. But we watched the storms come over the mountains and split as they came over us. The rain went north and south of us. Indio got drenched. Ocotillo Wells got drenched. We stayed dry. It's gotta be a pretty robust system to make it to Salton City...

We're here. Full cell signal. Weather is mild. Nice low breeze. Not too cold yet. Not exactly in the old spot. Someone was already there. We're right next to it though. Got a good sized area roped off. Gps coordinates off the 60 c are:
N 33* 17.559
W 116* 00.064
See you all tomorow. We're hittin the sleepin bag

Just woke up to a gorgeous, clear, cool desert morning. Got the coffee brewing. Moved the "fence" out a bit to make the camp a bit bigger. Found more big rocks for the fire ring. Fell asleep and woke up to the sound of engines. Lots of RVs rolling in all thru the night.
Fair warning to my fellow tent campers. Site is pretty rocky. Bring a tarp to put under your tent and be ready to do some rock clearing before u pitch it.

Sorry for being so bitchy. No sleep the night before and hacking up a lung for an hour and a half Saturday night (and trying to do it quietly because I knew Scott's wife was asleep)....I was done. Thank god I don't carry a sidearm. I would've shot somethin'. I was falling asleep driving home on Sunday after a double espresso.
AND
Creative use of a wrench. If it's Craftsman I wonder if you can use the picture to get a replacement on the warranty?

Well, was swamped today and didn't get to do anything with video. Which means that's probably going to have to wait until next weekend. <grrrr...>
Here are some still shots though from the weekend. To browse the entire contents, click here for small sizes, or click here for large sizes. I'll have a proper gallery up soon; for now those are just directory buckets.

Thanks for all the compliments guys! I love long-exposure night photography; still kind of experimenting with it as some of the pictures attest, but I'm real happy with how they turned out overall.
I had a really great time meeting and wheeling with everyone this weekend - can't wait till next year!

My trip report:
It was a mad scramble getting ready for this trip (like always for me). It was the maiden voyage on my new rear springs. I had a full set of Alcan springs, which I had been running on the front for about a season or so.. but still was running some fairly stock Rancho YJ springs on the rear. Last trip I snapped one of my rears (which in turn grenaded my rear drive shaft). So I finally got the new Alcan's on the rear. The ride is amazing.. Besides having a MUCH better ride, the other side affect was that it moved my rear axle back about 2 or 3 inches.. so I'm stoked about that too.
Wheeled just a little bit on Friday night, then hit it pretty hard on Saturday. The day started off to Shawn spooning me.. so the day couldn't get much worse.
Sometime in the day, I broke both of my motor mounts again after twisting myself up in some crazy notches, but nothing that prevented me from wheeling the rest of the day.
Bow tried to follow me and Manny through a pretty tight little notch, and broke his outers on his front axle, and then his steering. We got him back to camp, and then he loaded his junk up on my trailer, and drove back to San Diego. After getting home, he turned around and came back out to truckhaven with my bed (ie: my trailer)
After the raffle on Saturday night (where I didn't win anything), we went to the notches and played a bit, found some punk kids who Shawn almost had to beat down because they were being lame trying to instigate stuff from the top of the notch. They felt that they could ever move, or I'd run them over, so the beat-down was averted. After stopping by the other JA camp and seeing the few of them who were still awake, we headed back to camp. I did my normal routine and went to sleep at about 3am on my trailer. I was rudely woken up at around 530 by raindrops hitting me on the face. I slept the next few hours in my truck. By about 930, all of truckhaven was a soupy mess. I was completely un-prepared for this, so I wasn't going to be doing any more wheeling on this trip. We packed it up, and headed home.
VERY good trip, good friends, met some new people. Thanks to everyone we camped with for the hospitality, the food, tools, firewood...etc. When's the next trip?

Oh yeah.. the nature police talked to us while we were out there... apparently it's in the "fine print" in some unknown rule book that I've never seen... that you are not "allowed" to drive though any sort of virgin notches.. You must stay on previously driven paths. I get it for driving through the middle of no-where with a bunch of plant and animal life, but a notch? really??

better late then never. finally got my pics uploaded. Didn't win anything at the raffle this year. The seats I won last year were fantastic though!! I never realized the old ones were as bad as they were. It was a great time as always. weather was great until Saturday night when the temperature dropped and the wind picked up.
