Great work as usual MikeThumbsUp

Nice work as always Mike

Sucks dead as hell the corn is still up and the deer are just hanging out in there and wont come out, field were to wet and now they are cutting the beans down and will get the the corn sooner or later
By Scramblerman72 - 11/15/2009 11:51:21 AM
some dieing here also I have deer near me just not big bucks
I killed 3 does already early in the season to fill the freezer now I am waiting for the big bucks as I can only get 2 bucks, so they have to count, I will kill more Does later in December or when I fill both buck tags
By Scramblerman72 - 11/21/2009 9:47:23 AM
Cus Mike is a backwards ass redneck and that's how he fabs stuff

That or it doesn't matter as the bolt hole doesn't move and it doesn't matter which way it faces and that gives him more room for skid plate work
By Scramblerman72 - 11/22/2009 12:38:30 AM
well that doesn't make sense, as the hole is located where ya weld it on at.
I thought why you didn't weld them on the other way to make said ramp and not a hook which is why i figured skid plate
By Scramblerman72 - 11/22/2009 8:06:09 AM
more like when ya back up, forward the Spring keeps it from hanging up in reverse if the mount was 180* it would help ramp/slid up and over a rock where the 90* hanger wont
By Scramblerman72 - 11/23/2009 1:32:41 AM
Thats why I was on your side about you had a reson why it was mounted in that direction as it was near the skid plate and you did it for a reson and I wheel harder and wouldnt care if I had a ramp or not on the shackel enough skinny peddle tacks care of that
By Scramblerman72 - 3/14/2010 2:30:12 PM
yea its a 205 and they can take the abuse of being low slung
By RockNut - 11/11/2009 8:05:36 AM
The mag run flats don't burn like 100% magnesium. I think they are actually a mix. I kept all my scrap mag runflats for fires> it does burn pretty bright and smokes a lot.Flamin
By ioman2 - 3/10/2010 2:04:34 AM
this may be a newb question, but what wire diameter did you use to weld the motor mount?

i really like the cross member a lot. very clean looking yet beafy
By ioman2 - 4/18/2010 10:06:09 AM
i spent my friday night fabbing up a cross member and the whole time i thought that if mine half as professional as this one i'd be doing well. mine doesn't look spiffy, but i gained a new appreciation for quality fab work.

I know that a normal campfire wont ignite a chunck of VW block more than a half inch thick. If you build a fire with tall rock ring and dry pine hot enough to melt beer bottles in under a min, the mag will light and be blinding bright for over an hour...
or so i have heard Angel1...burning magnesium is illegal in CA for some reason.
By Sarges 7 - 11/11/2009 1:24:09 AM
Looks like a great project, Mike.

As for magnesium, a friend and I have played with some that we know to be magnesium (pieces taken off a machine at his work). We found that the smaller the piece, the easier it burns. Also, the hotter the fire you use the better it burns. We also found that the introduction of air makes it get really hot and bright.
By Sarges 7 - 11/12/2009 1:55:24 AM
Just out of curiosity, Mike, why not do a shackle reversal?
By Sarges 7 - 11/15/2009 1:56:26 AM
It's lookin' real good, Mike. Too bad the Yeti didn't move along this fast...

What's new on this thing, Mike?

**transplanting this from another forum, so the first couple posts timing is off a bit...**

I could have swore i made a thread about this Jeep build already, but I have searched for an hour, and came up empty, so here goes.

Picked this rig up from a buddy, who got it from another guy. It's been passed around like a $2 whore for a couple years, and it's tired..... Was a true basket case when it rolled my way, needing a lot of love.

I was gonna build it for myself to have a streetable/trail jeep, but decided that i really didn't need that, so i sold it to my Mother in Law and her boyfriend Dave. Cool part is that i still get to build it, and that's what i really love, so all is good to go.

Some specs... came to me partially assembled, parts flying off, hanging off, engine on a stand, etc.... Came with a 350 (unknown condition) as well as a tpi350 with Siamese runner and aftermarket throttle body, etc... If you know Uncle Holley, you know the motor. Yes, that one. 60 front, 14 bolt rear, Hummer wheels, 2" spacers all around, tub, grill, tube fenders, some awful seats, and that's about it.

First order of business was compete tear down, and removal of all the stuff that was poorly done. Missed welds, outboarding not wide enough, poor anti wrap fab, etc.... Plans are reversed XJ rear springs, YJ fronts, new shackles, new outbarding blocks, front bumper to widen the outboard mounting area.... blah blah blah, paint it all, put it back together, etc... just another 1 ton jeep build i guess. How bout some pics....

How it came to me...

Tub takes a ride to get some love and paint from Dave

Into the shop for tear down and rebuild...

Some of the crap I am dealing with on this rig...

Out with the old, with some help from Max....

Flipped to access the stuff to cut off easier...

The axles... in need of some love as well..

So, stay tuned, this ones should move pretty fast.
By carwash - 11/10/2009 10:57:12 PM
Tonight's work sucked the balls, and not in the good kind of ball sucking way...

Cut the H1 runflat's off for Dave's wheels. I had some concerns leaving them in, as he is only running 40" tires. That doesn't put much space between that magnesium and the rubber when aired way down. I think a runflat is was cut my tire in Harlan, and I run 44's...

So, used my convertible bandsaw to cut the major part off, then took the 4.5 grinder to them to knock it down the rest of the way, then used a 4.5 flap wheel to take all the sharp edges off.

So, contrary to popular belief, the magnesium does not burst into flames and explode when you cut it. It doesn't catch on fire with the inability to be extinguished, etc. So, just out of curiosity, I took some shavings and made a little pile, and took a lighter to it. Took a second to catch, but then it did burn pretty bright, but burned out rather quickly. I took a bigger chunk and tried to catch it on fire, no luck. So, not as dangerous as people once thought. I did save all the scrap huge chunks and a tin of powder and shavings from teh cutting and grinding. Next hot campfire, I'ma toss the shit in there, see if it will burn. Leads me to believe that they are made from some sort of magnesium alloy and not pure mag... will see if i can find out, just for reference...

This whole process for the 8 half runflats took me about 2 hours. Not too bad i guess. Not looking forward to it, but I have to do it all over again with my own rig in a few days.... ugh.
By carwash - 11/10/2009 10:57:48 PM
Had school til 10 tonight, then hit the shop to knock out a couple hours.... Dave brought his hummer shells back, all beadblasted and ready to go. I welded the rock rings into the outer shells... now the fun part, reassembly.

Started my frame repair tonight as well. The areas of swiss cheese will be sleeved with c-channel. I made the channel from rect stock. Found some in my piles and piles of stock that has the right ID to go over the existing OD. Cut the one end off, making a sweet C that will slide down over the frame, once i notch out the areas for the rock sliders and body mounts.

Once welded in place, should stiffen things up extremely, and make a nice solid area to mount the new custom crossmember to. got too late, and I didn't feel like cutting steel anymore... this is the first of about 6 i need to make...
By carwash - 11/10/2009 10:58:23 PM
Frame sleeve cut and in place, awaiting some squirted metal. This will make a really nice surface to mount the crossmember to. I hate welding stuff to a jeep frame, just can't be trusted...

By carwash - 11/10/2009 10:59:03 PM
Ok, all frame repair done. Beadblasted, and back to the shop for spring mounting and reassembly, etc.

Plated the corners with some triangles. The P.O. had plated the frame in the rear on the bottom and sides, but it was done with some sort of really wavy metal, so i wanted a nice strong flat surface to mount the shackle hangers to.

Put on the outriggers for the front, fitted and polished them into the 3x3 front block to make it one nice piece. Looks nice i think.

Did some plating on the top of the frame in the rear as well where the spring mounts will sit for the same reason. There was some really unlevel wavy metal here as well. Flat surfaces are much nicer for mounting crap to.

Another shot of the tcase mounting area of the frame. This area was one of my biggest concerns due to the force that is put here.

Here's some shots of it all bead blasted and etch primed.

Obligatory action shot....

Wheels painted and mated up with the tires. No shots of tires on, got too damn late. I like the paint color. Drab olive and black. This will be the color scheme of the rig all over as well.

By carwash - 11/11/2009 12:05:27 AM
Vw housings are actually magnesium... I don't think these things have that much mag in them, maybe half at most. The only thing that will catch with a standard flame are the fine shavings. I think they will blaze nice in a hot coals fire tho!
By carwash - 3/5/2010 8:13:14 PM
Did a couple more day's work on this, this week. Put tub on for measurements, then pulled it back to drop the drivetrain into it to build mounts...

Used your standard horn/fabset mounts for the motor and tube between the horn and frame. They will be braced with plate vertically, and another tube horizontally, but not until I pull the motor back out.

Hiccup in the mix, one of the 1/2" holes on the 205 adapter was stripped, so drilled and tapped it for 9/16... that was a bitch.

With the way these cast adapters are notorious for breaking in aftermarket applications, I wanted to utilize the stock style mounts so that the thing could as much flex as needed as to not break the ears off. Cross your fingers, still trying to figure out a way to utilize a torque type auxiliary mount for it.

Utilized tubing, fabsets, and 1/4" plate to finish up the tcase mount. May still do some more bracing and more protection off of it, but the jury is still out, as this is a serious budget build. What i have now works, and i've already got a half day into it.

Had to make a cutout in one tube for the 205 to drop into. The pig tcase already hangs too low, so i wanted to tuck the xmember up as high as i could.

Rolling this out today to insulate the shop. Not a ton left to do on it. Rear anti-wrap, finish motor mounts, tub install, hood/fenders/grill, radiator, wiring, paint, blah blah, blah... ok still quite a bit.
By carwash - 3/6/2010 11:04:46 AM
Thanks john... I'm just a hack.
By carwash - 3/9/2010 12:30:38 PM
Braced and burned in the motor mounts today... they should hold. Mounting anti-wrap bar tomorrow, then it gets a little rest again.

By carwash - 3/10/2010 8:36:37 AM
I run .035 wire. It's perfect for me for .125 to .375 metals.
By carwash - 3/11/2010 11:26:31 AM
it's an np205, to get it even with the frame rails it would be sitting in the passenger's lap. it's not a drivetrain conducive to a flat skid. flat skids are way overated anyway... it's too short to make much more angle in that rear shaft as well. flat ain't all that, just give it some gas you pussies.
By carwash - 4/18/2010 12:56:30 PM
if it works, it's good to go!
By carwash - 11/19/2009 10:29:12 PM
not a thing new. Its outside under a tarp. Body needs body work and paint. That is in process right now. Need the tub before we can mock up motor mounts and tcase mounts etc. Won't be long.

Knocking out a cj5 cage presently. Pics of that soon as well.
By carwash - 11/20/2009 2:34:03 AM
Man, I'm a dick. Yes, i will get your tubes done this weekend.
By carwash - 11/21/2009 11:58:33 AM
These are "way back" shackle hangers. It flips it so that it puts the spring further towards the back of the rig, therefore extending wheelbase slightly...
By carwash - 11/22/2009 1:39:22 AM
Ramp.... Hook.... What the hell are you all even talking about? These put the shackle as far back as possible.
By carwash - 11/22/2009 10:38:46 AM
Oh i see now... hahahah. Yeah, I have the one set the "correct" way, but the other set I had to turn around due to where it was going to sit on the frame. It has so many patches, etc, that I had to work where I had flat spots. The ramp idea is ridiculous, think about it for a minute. There will be a tcase mount, skid plate, etc. If i wedge something in that area, no amount of ramp is going to slide it off there. You damn web wheelers... go out and get stuck or something, hahahah.
By carwash - 11/23/2009 11:00:44 AM
Again, had no choice... was out of flat space to put it... wasnt going to cobble any more plate and patch shit onto that area.
By carwash - 11/14/2009 1:53:23 PM
Moving right along, got a shit ton done today... it rolls again.

Shackles built and everything assembled with Lawson grade12 bolts. 120,000 pound tensile strength or something freaking insane like that.

Springs mounted, rig flipped and axles back under it... whooohoooo

Now, next in line is to get tub painted, frame painted, set tub on frame, build motor mounts, build tcase mounts, reinstall cage, wired it, etc... you know just a few hours work.
By carwash - 11/14/2009 9:47:44 PM

By carwash - 11/15/2009 11:12:30 AM

By carwash - 11/11/2009 3:12:29 AM
Looking forward to messing with it at the next campfire...
By carwash - 11/11/2009 11:45:33 PM
Got the front end done as far as spring hangers and shackle mounts. Measure 100 times, weld once.

It's pretty sweet seeing the springs on it, even if it is upside down. I used the length of string method to know where to place the shackle mount. ie; measure the length of the spring as if it were flat. hold it at the bolt for the spring mount, lengthen if forward past where the spring stops in arched position. Take a look at how much string you have extra, and make sure that the length of the shackle you have can absorb that much length by the shackle swinging forward...

Here's some shots of the springs on... moving right along i guess.

Now on to the rear.
By carwash - 11/12/2009 2:58:29 AM
IMO, the only thing a shackle reversal gets you is better road handling. I have no problem with shackles in the front, the distance the axle travels due to spring flex is so miniscule, that it's not worth extra effort to do.
By carwash - 11/12/2009 10:52:23 AM
Not expensive, this build is on the super cheap. It will be a 1 ton CJ with less than $4k in it, not a stock YJ with $10k in it.
By carwash - 11/12/2009 11:19:35 AM
My tires do be the pricey... it's like a goddam cocaine habit.
By carwash - 11/12/2009 2:34:08 PM
Only been seriously hammering on it for a couple weeks... hammering it.
By YJ Bill - 11/11/2009 3:24:49 AM
Get a piece of magnesium to light and pour water on it, it really doesn't go out, more or less explodes
By YJ Bill - 11/22/2009 2:53:31 AM
CW, the comments are not about the shackle mount but the hangers on the other end of the spring, usually they are turned 180* from yours so they act as a ramp when you go over something

Any particular reason the rear spring hangers are mounted (what I would consider) backwards?

Great looking work so far.

By bgredjeep - 11/21/2009 11:03:40 AM
The skid theory or the backward ass redneck make sense. I just figure you would usually want the hanger to provide a ramp from the frame rather than a hook.
By bgredjeep - 11/23/2009 8:57:16 AM
I don't know about your trans skid, but mine is flat. Having a ramp over the spring vs a 4-5" ridge to get over just makes sense. Driving over a log or a rock that is dragging down the frame rail... You might not get hung up really bad, but your aren't helping things with that hanger.

Was curious about the same thing, Mike. You had to do all new sring mounts anyway, so figured you go SR.

Just completed a reversal on my rig cause I was sick of bending/breaking a fawkin leaf every trip out. When drooped out and trying to climb a rock, apparently was easier for axle to go backwards and bend spring at frame mount end than to pop tire up on top of rock. That, plus the better ride and improved approach angle...so far has been a good mod.

Negatives: I did need to get an extra long slip driveshaft (mo $$$). And will have to add a x-member so when using winch to suck the front end down, it pulls up and not fwd on the axle.

How long you been working on that beast? Looks like a chit ton of pics/progress! Good job!

Nice work as usual, CW. But question on why you chose to mount the t-case so low under the framerails? Probably a "different builds for different regions/terrain" thing. But typically we go for getting everything up between the frame rails as much as possible and try to run a flat skid from rail-to-rail.

No wonder you thought we were insane bitching about the spring hangers! ;-)
