Remember when Wendy’s had the finger in the chili scandal? Here is an incident that involves a fast food chain and a thumb.
A student in my Senior AP Economics class works as an asst. manager at a local McDonalds. He is a good kid with a father who is a MD, but makes his kid earn his money for car/insurance/gas/trip to Europe etc. He tells me this story this morning about an incident that he experienced Friday night about 9:00 pm.
A little girl (about 5) comes screaming into the restaurant asking for help. She had slammed the door of a Yukon and severed the thumb of her 80-year-old grandfather. Chris (the student) grabs the first aid kit and rushes outside to find the man sucking on the nub of where his thumb used to be, blood gushing out. Chris commands the man to hold his hand out so he can press the iodine patch onto and try to stop the bleeding. The manger is losing it and the grandma and little girl are freaking out. Chris is trying to get everyone to stay composed. The whole time the idiot without a thumb is screaming at the little girl that it is her fault.
After the paramedics arrive, he has to locate the severed thumb and place it a baggy with ice (it was the whole thumb) and then, Chris has to drive the old lady and little girl in their car to the hospital. The first one is full (in Sun City/Menifee) so they have to drive all the way to Riverside. The little girl is taking it badly and Chris tries to ease her worries the whole time. He said he felt like punching the guy for what he (the old man) said to her.
Chris doesn’t get home until mid-night, but he was on the clock and getting overtime. The guy comes in the next day and has the thumb re-attached.
I thought this was a cool story about the youth of society. We always hear about the screw-ups, but this helps to restore my faith in the next generation. Chris stayed calm and collected thru the whole ordeal while everyone else lost their heads (or thumb, I guess I can understand the ol guy freaking out).

It is good to see that people will still step up and do what is needed when the time comes. One thing I have found in life is that you never know how you are going to react in an emergency until you are actually faced with it. People with strong moral character will usually step up, and those without, well, will not.
My 14 yo son, Jon, has had some issues, but overall is a good kid. I was impressed with just how strong his will is when, about a year ago, his foot was run over by a quad. It tore him up pretty good, but he never once complained, whined, or cried, even when we had to scrub the wound. He just....took it. He has fully recovered by now, and it is just a memory, but that day really stuck out, because he could have easily panicked, or let himself get into self-pity, or allowed himself any manner of non-productive emotions. Instead, he manned up and dealt with it. In fact, everyone there that day stepped up and did what was needed. There's hope for us yet.
One beer at a time...

Wow, great for your friend. At least the old guy is old enough that he should kick the bucket soon. Should be bitch slapped for treating the little girl like that.

Pete, that was a bad weekend for accidents if I recall correctly. But your right, Jon was a man that day. Had it been me, I would've been crying like a big baby.

Props to your friend Chris for keeping a level head.
So am I the only one wondering how a Tahoe door can completely sever a finger? I slamed my finger in my F150 door a while back. Hurt like a MF, but don't see how it can completely remove a finger. Even if the bone broke, the skin would keep it attached right?

Yea, and with a 5 year old being the one slamming it shut. It was a clean sheer off from Chris' conversation. He is a pretty remarkable and reliable kid.
p.s. He's not my friend, he is my student.

It must be just me, but I have to admit that if my thumb got severed, I'd have a little bit of an "attitude" too... I know, I know, I'm gonna get ripped for this, all in all, the guy should have kept his wits about him, and not been hard on the girl, afterall they call them "accidents" for a reason, they don't call them "purposes"....

Mike you beat me to it man...
Just like you never know how you will react in a panic situation, like the kid did so well with helping etc... You also don't know how you are going to react when your fucking thumb gets cut off... if it was me, i may have punched the kid in the throat as a reaction... sorry, just get off the old man's nuts, he had his thumb cut off for christ sake, that might hurt a bit.

I've had a lot of things happen to me in my life (multiple broken bones - arms, fingers, thumbs, ankles, sometimes at the same time -, fingers stuck in doors - to include the hinge side -, blown out knees, etc... However, I've never reacted like that. I don't care if he did get his thumb severed, he's a bitch for treating the kid that way. If I'd been there, I may have punched the asshole in the throat for treating the kid that way. Maybe that's just me, so, unfortunately, I won't "get off the old man's nuts".
Sorry, Mike(s), nothing against either of you, but that's just the way I feel about the situation.
