Hello all, I just bought an 83 scrambler with what seems to be a good 4.2L/258 with somewhere around 100k miles on it. I would like to go ahead and do a rebuild on one of my other two 4.2L's though, just to have a fresh engine ready to put in. I've been looking at complete rebuild kits for the 258 but would like to get a kit with a small cam and that would make some more horsepower but I cant seem to find one just OEM one's. Does anyone know where I can find a complete kit like this? No I do not want to put a bigger engine in either, thats what the 360 in my cj7's for, I want to keep it stock and my daily driver just want more HP. I was also debating on taking the engine to a machine shop and having the block milled and the head shaved and true the cylinders up, anyone have that done to there's yet? Just wondering on engine life on that one? As always thanks in advance for all the info.

I just rebuilt my 232 for my 77 cj-5. I did not use a kit. I had the machine work done locally, new pistons, valves, valve job, guides, bearings and head mill. cost about $1000 bucks, plus i bought a crane truck power cam( i think it was a 264?)from quadratec or 4wd.com i can't remember which. unfortunately I have not got it back in the jeep yet to see how it runs(rebuilding the t-150, dana 20 and all new wiring from painless(ha) wiring)I sure hope it all works in the end or my wife is gonna be PISSED. Good luck with your rebuild.

Thanks bowens that is what I was looking for. I talked to the guy who is helping me with my 360 build up and he said the same thing. I guess when the machine work is done they have all the sizes right there so all they have to do is call and have it sent. I just did not know if I could order it myself and save some dough on the parts, they always seem to stick us for another 10-15 percent if they order the parts. Thanks for the info.

The stroker kit is a cool way to polish the turd, you get good low end torque and some measurable horsepower gains.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming WOO HOO what a ride!!!

Seems like Clifford makes a pretty mean upgrade kit too. Another cj guy told me to look at them and its expensive but will turn out 220 little horses when done. Considering the stock I6 only has from 102-120 HP depending on what tranny you have I'd say that might be a happy lil' increase huh?

I looked at the clifford stuff on the web site and it looks cool. I just can blow that kind of coin yet, so i figured i would do all the internal work first and then spring for the intake and header later. i also bought a weber carb to replace the old 1bbl. I really needed new wiring and transmission more than a hp increase. the synchros in my t-150 were really trashed and the wiring was interesting to say the least. but if it was all perfect i would just have to find another on e to work on.
