My check engine light came on today... I did the turn key 3 times trick and it gave me error code "P 0456". I looked it up on the net before work and appears to be a "small leak in the evap system".

I was wondering if someone with a service manual of around this year can check and see if 0456 is actually that code, and what are the possible areas to check.

I haven't forked out the $100 at the dealer to get the service manual... it's definitely on my "GET LIST" as soon as I dont have so many friggen bills! Big Smile

Hmm... I read around and might be the gas cap... I loosened that sucker and unplugged the battery to reset the codes... It turned off. I've started it 3 times over the last couple hours and drove it a few miles.

Hasn't came back on... Hopefully that fixed it.. If so, that's a damn easy fix! Big Smile

Usually it is the gas cap. The feds decided long ago that we should not be venting fuel vapors into the atmosphere, so the automakers installed evap charcol canisters to store vapors from the fuel tank and carb bowl, and a purge solenoid to purge those stored vapors from the canister into a running engine. The feds then later decided the automakers needed a way to monitor that sytem to be sure it was functioning properly, so they devised a pressure sensor to monitor for leaks in the system. Anything, including a loose or faulty gas cap, that causes the system to lose pressure, will trigger the MIL (malfunction indicator lamp).

One thing that will cause this system to eventually fail is over filling the tank with fuel. You know, click, click, click with the fuel nozzle at the gas pump?

Anyway, it's a relatively simple system comprised primarily of simple rubber hoses. Any dry rotting or loose connection could also be an issue.

I work at Auto Zone and when we run those codes on cars 95% it's the gas cap either not on correct or has a crack in it, so you probably fixed it.
