Well I have always been a Dana 30 guy since thats what My Jeeps have came with and I would just carry Ujoints and axles adn just run em. Well I never once broke a ujoint or axle in a 30 with 35" tires even and 4.0, locked and not very easy.
Well now in my XJ the front D30 is the 90 disco that has I did the one piece shafts and a no slip in. But I am havnig Popping issues that are Not normal, Yeah yeah they make noice but this is not moving just turning the steering wheel left adn right. As well as flat towing with a tow bar I either have to fully remove teh front shaft or disconnect the front and rear, since the hubs are non selectable.
Then the steering is in need of work, with 7" of lift on a XJ its like 10 on a TJ in the draglnik angles. So the steering needs to be flipped at least.
So with all that said.. I guess I could just get some Yukon axles (380set) and then flip the steering for about 200 total in parts. And then see if the locker lets go or hope that the D30 isnt bent or such. Or..
I could get a Waggy front end for 250 complete caliper to caliper. Then get the XJ mounts on it and keep the stock tie rod and sleeve it, then weld the spyders, and gear it and R&R the brakes. all for about the same as the obove option or maybe less. and have the D30 to part out for some small $.
My deliema is that someone on another board is telling me that its not going to be worth the swap. To just do some yukons and Super joints and run it. But with 4:88's I feel very sketchy in R&P and the pop and the hubs wont be any better after.
Any thoughts here???

someday as in the next year or 5 years from now?
if you plan on going bigger than 35s then throw a 44 under there for r&p strength. there is no shaft/joint difference between a 30/44

I don't know if I trust the yukon chromo shafts. I watched Mike (LTCjeep) snap his with 36's and we never even knew it popped till way later.. it didn't even make a noise when it broke. He is VERY easy on his stuff too. I hammer everything I own and have had no problems with the warn shafts.
all that said. go with the 44

I spent a LOT of money polishing my turdy, and in the end it was not worth it. If you have the option of getting a '44 for not a lot, then that's the way I would go.

Being one of those guys sporting a highly polished turdy... I'd do it over again. Honestly, by the time you regear, lock, and bracket out a 44 to fit your TJ, you've dumped alot of time and money into it... and you only have a stock D44 axle to show for it. IMHO, that's "equal" to a polished D30.
FWIW, my 4.88s, Alloy USA shafts, 760X, and lockrite in the LP30 spinning 36" TSLs has served me well so far (knock on wood and all that crap ). I've been hammer-down bouncing the front end quite a few times on hill climbs... the first few, I was VERY surprised nothing broke... then I started getting more comfortable that it would hold up to my "moderate" abuse. The tiny 4.88 pinion gear scared me at first, but it seems to be fine. Precision Gear 4.88s, BTW.
If I had larger tires in mind, I'd start looking for a HP60 (I'd just skip the 44... if yer gonna spend the $$ and effort, might as well do it right the first time), but I'm happy with 36s, so I'll continue to test my luck w/ my chrome-plated D30

But I know I'm a lucky man, God's given me a pretty fair hand, got a house and piece of land, a few dollars in a coffee can, my old truck's still runnin' good, my ticker's tickin' like they say it should, I've got supper in the oven, a good woman's lovin' and one more day to be my little kid's dad. Lord knows I'm a lucky man.

Well, I don't know too awful much about the 30, I've tended to replace it asap. The 44, however, I have never done anything but gears, stub shafts (Chevy style) and brakes to my 44's, (run stock shafts and joints), and wheeled the crap out of it hammer-down style with 36's (once bouncing the whole Jeep 2' in the air repeatedly, "bunny hop" style and also jumping the Jeep repeatedly) and I've never broken anything significant. I'd go 44, but that's just my opinion.
