I have an 84 CJ7 that just blew the stock 4.2 gas guzzlin engine.  It had a cooling problem that I am going to have to fix at some point, but am looking to swap it out with a 4.0HO from a 92 (i think).

I'd like to know if this is the right move? If there are any issues that I'll have to be dealing with? If the Bell housing is going to bolt up or if I need to change the tranny and t-cas too?

what aftermarket items are there out there? wiring harness, computer etc....

I built the jeep up to be a good trail rig, not a rock climber, or an asphalt poser.  And been havin fun with it, until this happened.

I have the T176 tranny, centerforce 1 clutch, D300 T-Case (bone stock), 4.5" Rubicon express lift, 1" body lift, D44 front diff, and F9" rear. CV rear Drive shaft. 36" SS Iroks.

You're going to need the computer, wiring harness, fuel pump and a lot of patience for the swap.  It seems straight forward, but in reality it's a LOT of work.

Other than the engine mounts being in the right place, and adapters, a V-8 swap is no more difficult than a 4.0L swap.

Think I'll be better off swapping for a 4.0.  I have a T176 manual tranny, will the bell housing fit right up to the 4.0? or do I need to find a new tranny?

Call Hesco,ask for Benny, pick up there fuel injection wiring kit for a 4.0 ltr, it will come with all the directions, it's a five wire hook up, not really that hard to do.

You will need to either have your BH adapted to mate a CPS, or get Hesco front engine CPS kit.

Call Novak to get a ready made crank bushing to mate the tranny to the 4.0 ltr.

BH = bell housing

CPS = Crank Position Sensor

You will also need to find a way to rig up a correct fuel pump to run the higher fuel pressure the 4.0 ltr requires, I think it is near 45 psi, bit not sure.  IMOH yhe easiest fix is to run a TJ or YJ fuel tank and pump.

Breakfast = One live toad. I choke that mofo down, and I am well assured that nothing worse will happen to me for the rest of the day.

Thanks for all your help!  I do apperciate all of it.  In your suggestions and in my research, i believe that it will be better to swap in a Chevy350 with a throttle body injection ('91).

the T176 tranny is a medium duty and will handle the additional HP/Torque and the D300 T-Case is the same, acccording to Novak.  I'll hve to get a bell housing and adaptor from NOvak for the hook up, and a fuel pump and wiring harness, might as well run dual yellow tops too while im at it.

anyway - Thanks again for all your help and advice.  I will take pics and keep ya'all up on the progress.
