Working on a friends 2001 Grand Cherokee 4.0. Have replaced fuel filter, spark plugs, and crank position sensor. Put injector cleaner in fuel. It starts fine when cold, but after it has been ran and warmed up, it will not start for about an hour. Engine turns over, but will not start. It also acts strange sometimes while sitting at a stop light. The engine will skip sometimes like it wants to quit. I thought replacing the CPS would take care of this problem but it had no affect. Any ideas out there? I am considering Coil Rail next.

Long shot idea.... cracked head. When cold the crack is very small almost non-existant but after it warms up the crack expands, it will skip and won't start.

You know, you may be on to something there dirtyhall. But wouldn't it have extreme pressure or boil over in the cooling system? I have not seen any of that, but I don't drive it all the time either. The radiator was cracked at the filler neck when I first looked at the vehicle for a friend. I replaced the radiator and the electric coolling fan that was not working anymore. Perhaps it did run hot and crack the head. Only thing, I don't understand why this would not allow the engine to start. It cranks over, but just won't start. That is why I was thinking something electrical.

If the csp was bad.... it won't run at all.
so - you can rule that out.

I had a bad TPS act up only when the engine was warmed up on my TJ. Sometimes causing stalls and hestations and refusing to start. happened more on the highway than at a stop light. Took three trips to the dealer to finally figure out that it was the TPS.
I don't have the coil rail, but when my coil was failing, I would just intermittant spark, but it really didn't matter what the engine temperature was. Can you test a coil rail ? Maybe for excessive resistence?

Thanks Nakedjeeper. I think I will try the TPS. That is a simple and not very expensive thing to do. If that doesn't do it then I will try the coil rail. Used coil rails are hard to find around here. I checked several salvage yards but only one had it. They wanted 100 dollars for it. Heck, I can get a new on from Advance for that. Thanks again.
