There use to be no question, when shopping for a battery, i'd look for an optima.  However, i remember hearing a few years back that optima was bought by... Die hard.. i think, and that their quality had plummeted.

Is this the case?  I'm in a sutuation where i need to replace my optima (its good and dead) and i didnt want to blindly buy another optima if theres a better choice.

This is for my YJ, so it will see offroad use, it will also sit for long periods of time.

Thanks!

I still think Optima is your best bet.

Optimas may not be so good these days.

I bought a Sears (rebadged Odyssey) Platinum Die Hard to replace my aged Optima.

Great battery. It's been accidentally discharged to zero twice and revived with no apparent damage.

Outstanding warranty.

Do a search on Pirate for more info.

Optima batteries are made by Johnson Controls, the same company that makes the Autozone Duralast batteries.  I just put a yellow top in the XJ.  They are still great batteries.

Edit:  After doing some more research, the odds are that no matter what battery you buy, you'll be buying one made by Johnson Controls.  They have owned Optima since 2000, so they have a pretty good track record there.  They also make Interstate, Die Hard, Duralast, Kirkland, and OEM batteries for Ford, Chrysler, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and Izuzu, as well as many other private label batteries.

You can't go wrong with an Optima.

Yup, johnson controls ownes the battery market. They have introduced so many new sizes in newer cars that it seems like the others couldn't keep up and got bought out. It was rummored that interstate had over 1 million bad batteries on the shelf at the end of 2010 and shipped them anyways. I was a long time interstate fan, we even offered a 5 year free replacment warranty at our shop for years, and rarely replaced one. Now 2-3 years is the average and that program is history. I'm with Pete, Optimas seem to be the best out there.

Optimas still don't leak.  That is the only good thing about them.  But....., that's a good thing.  I have a pile of no-good 1-2 year old optimas.  One trick the parts guys are doing is not putting the battery in the computer, keep your receipt.

How about Orbital agm batteries ??

There are choices out there. I would check around for an established battery store near you and see what they have.

Around here, we have American Battery supply. They sell auto/industrial batteries, make cables, sell everything battery related, etc.

A boat shop may be another resource for agm batteries.

I found part of the deal with Optimas was getting a gel cell charger, they do something special, not sure what. But I no longer run Optima they were to exspensive and just did not out preform I guess if I had a full on buggy or something I might think about them again since you can mount them at and angle you want.
