I have read plenty of articles and discussion info on axle swaps, however I am still very ignorant in one small area. Assuming that I will be doing an axle swap in my 85 cj7 why are we ONLY cutting the long side axle tube. Especially if not all vehicle have the same frame widths and spring perch locations. This is leaving me confused because I guessed that the center-line of the vehicle will dictate the off set location of the output shaft on the transfer case. Wouldn't one need to cut both tubes to set the differential location inline with the transfer case, and if not, why?
Thanks in advance. Rick

The questions are:
What axle are you using?
What is the current width? (WMS to WMS)
What width are you looking for?
1 custom axle length verses 2 custom axle lengths !!!

Well currently I have a Dana 30 regular rotation, it is a stock wide track and i wanted to widen the stance 2" a side. In theory of course. I'm actually weighing my options of swapping out an axle or rebuild my Dana 30. Its a daily driver with 35" tires and light off road use, no rock crawling or over the fender mudding. I understand the custom axle length option. Thanks for the explanation.

Not all factory front ends are aligned with the t-case. The 67-72 GM trucks that I've had were not 90 degree squares off the front ends or t-case looking down at the drivetrain.
I'm not sure why you are trying to widen the track; probably stability. Given the light duty offroading you wish to do, I would monkey with wheels (offset) and perhaps spacers depending on legality of your location.
Unless you are planning on more serious offroading or bigger tires, I would stick with the 30. Maybe higher strength replacement axles, not a complete swap of axle housings.

Why just the long side? If you have a 44 with cast in spring perches, and the donor vehicle has a wider frame, then you can cut the long side only to match the short side without having to do twice the work and have two custom axle shafts. There are options out there for stock shafts from other applications.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming WOO HOO what a ride!!!
