Well I made this snorkel about two years ago now, and I figured since so many people have asked about it, I would go ahead and do a write up. Now, as I said, its been a while since I put this together, so the prices may not be totally accurate, but I pieced it together for around 40 bucks or so.
Parts list:
5' of 2" Diameter black PVC ~ $8
2 each elbows (not 45*, half that, can't remember exact, like 22* or so i think) ~ $2 each
1 tub of Rain N Shine PVC Glue ~$5
1 2" air duct flange (ricer aisle at Auto Zone) ~$4
1 length of air duct hose from ricer aisle at Auto Zone (they now have colors) ~$15
1 Cheap rechargeable air filter from Auto Zone ~ $25
length of Vinyl tube to extend Evap canister hose and hose clamp
and a 2" Hole saw
Now when I did this, I had already eliminated the stock air box. this is my fifth generation snorkel. it went through two cowel snorkel versions, and two other configurations, this is the final product.
the other thing is I no longer have my windshield washer fluid resevoir as i drilled a hole in it when i did my TJ flares, so i routed the air duct through the area the resevoir used to be.
Here is the air filter i got from Auto Zone, its not a K&N, but it is rechargeable, and at the time, i could not find a K&N that would fit in the last evolution of the snorkel, so i re-used this filter for thie evolution. I want to change to a K&N at some point.

here is where i ran it through the body. I cut everything to length, and test fitted it, once everything was the way i wanted it, i separated the pieces and glued them together in place. I used a 45* elbow to turn into the body, and a 22* elbow to angle it properly.

the hole I cut in the body. ran a piece of PVC through, connected to the elbow, inside the fender, it is glued into the air duct flange i got at auto zone.

now, this piece is pretty ghetto and I will be re-doing it soon. for the CCV and the evap canister, I ended up just drilling holes in a piece of PVC, jamming the tubes in there and running silicone all over it. I plan to re-do that piece with some hose barbs. As you can see, i just used that chunk of PVC to connect the air duct tube, and the stock air tube to the throttle body

to sum it up, it works well, just keep the filter well oiled. there are a few small changes i want to make, but this is enough to give you all a basic idea to start from.
edit: I re-did the intake tube with the fuel cell install. much better now

Well, I'm glad my post finally erked you enough to get off your duff!  I like a decent DIY snorkel. I've seen some ghetto jobs but other then the bootyfab part under the hood, it looks pretty good.
I've thought about adding a snorkel on my Jeep for years but hven't decided if I need it. Although, with the rain we've been getting recently, I might have to get on it. |

| its not just rain where a snorkel is good. it works great on dusty trails too. keeps the filter cleaner because its so high, it doesn't suck as much dust. And like I said, I've been meaning to redo the ghetto stuff under the hood, just haven't gotten to it yet. |

| Outstanding !!! Have not seen anything close to usable snorkel for the buck !! Couldn't talk myself into the $250+ units, although I've seen 2 engine water pump/grenades this past year that could use something like this....thx |

| i keep the filter well lubed with K&N oil. that seems to repel most of the water. I put a small clean out plug at the lowest sopt on the tube for draining it. for the windshield mount, I still need to work something more permanent out. right now i just have it zip tied to my light mounts on the windshield |

That's pretty cool. I am currently coming up with my own design.
Instead of coming through the quarter panel, I want to make a slot in my hood,backed by a curved flange that matches the hood curve the pipe will pass through. |

You could just go throught the fire wall and up throught the cowell and still keep it out side...mine |

| I am doing a install like this one but I have an XJ... There is a couple vacuum hoses going into the air box... what can I do with those? Can I just cap them off or is there a reason for them going into the air box? |

| Clever work and no offense meant, but in my opinion these DIY snorkels made out of PVC sh1t pipe look like just that. |

| good stuff man ive been lookin for some ideas cuz im about to make one for mine. its the most decent homemade one ive seen yet and who gives a S what it looks like, if it works it works. and if your goin through anything that requires a snorkle youre obviously not in it for show anyways lol.. i do have one question though, why did you go with the duct tube under the hood instead of running PVC all the way and how has that stuff held up for you? |
