Off-Road Readiness 101

What to take to the trail?  Dan has provided us with a very comprehensive checklist for the hard-core wheeler!


Required (Highly suggested) Equipment:
• 6 pt Roll cage
• Sealed (non-spill) battery (Optima)
• Racing safety harness’ (quick release)
• Fire extinguisher(s)
• Ham / C.B. Radio

Recovery Equipment:
• Front winch
• Tow strap/rope
• High lift jack
• Come-a-long/hand winch

Repair Equipment:
• Complete mechanical tool kit
• Jeep repair manual (If your Jeep has any factory equipment on it... )
• Generator
• Bottle jack(s)
• Torch kit/hand torch
• OBW / Welder
• OBA / Air Compressor
• Air and / or electric tools
• Tire tools
• Tire plus / patches
• Spark plugs (pre-gapped) & Ignition wires
• Oil & Oil filter
• Funnel
• Mechanics wire
• Radiator sealer
• Rivet tool / sheet metal
• Tape measure
• All the spare parts and electrical components, hoses, belts, fuses, light bulbs, head lights, etc you can haul (especially the parts you have broke before)

General Equipment &Trail Box Contents:
• Flashlight(s) / extra batteries
• Cellular Phone
• GPS (Global positioning system)
• Camera
• Sleeping bag
• Rags / Towels
• Extra clothes
• Sunscreen
• Gloves
• Cooler (for food & beverage)
• Paper plates / plastic utensils
• Small grill / hibachi / charcoal / lighter fluid
• Tent
• Jumper Cables
• Duct tape
• WD-40
• Brake cleaner
• Glass cleaner
• Paper Towels
• Waterless hand cleaner
• Tarp
• Rope
• Bungee cords
• Tie down straps
• Full medical kit
• Flares
• Insect repellent
• Toilet paper (soft is good)

Trail Rack Contents:
• Full size spare tire
• Hi-lift jack
• Shovel
• Pick
• Axe
• Gas
• Water

Trail Food & Beverages
• Canned meat
• Ham / Bologna / assorted lunch meats
• Bread
• Mustard / mayonaise / *Miracle Whip / butter
• Canned and/or dried fruit
• Canned Vegetables
• Snack bars / energy bars
• Chips / *Doritos
• Water – Plenty of water
• Soda / iced tea / sports drinks / energy drinks / ice cold beverages of your choice. (Please drink responsibly at camp if you choose to enjoy alcoholic beverages)
• Be sure you either have a good electric cooler or access to plenty of ice – be sure to keep your food cold and safe.

General Suggestions:
• Always wheel with a friend (if you have one ... ).
• When you are preparing to go wheeling, always let someone knows where you are going and when you will be back.
• Please *Tread Lightly and respect the lands that you are wheeling on. Always obey rules and/or get permission for the land that you wheel on.
