30-Minute U-Joint Upgrade!
Converting the straps to u-bolts

Written by Mike Hill (01/01)
This modification was done to a YJ with a Dana 35, but could be implemented on a number of different vehicles in a very similar way.

If you have ever replaced your u-joints on your Jeep then I’m sure you’ve noticed the little straps holding the u-joint to the yoke.  I have always had problems with those straps not fitting right or the bolts breaking off and they seem to wear out rather quickly.  I have heard that those straps can be replaced with u-bolts and the u-bolts are stronger. So after a little searching for info I found what I was looking for.  I did the conversion and it was real easy and cheap to do and the u-bolts are holding up without any problems. This is all you will need to do the conversion.

bullet

U-bolt kit from for Dana 35 or Dana 35c

bullet

A 5/16 drill bit

bullet

Basic hand tools (sockets and wrenches)

bullet

A drill corded or cordless doesn’t matter

And about 30 minutes to do the job

With all that you are ready to begin.

Step 1:  First thing is jack up the Jeep to give your self some headroom.  Next remove the old strapping kit holding the u-joint to the yoke. You don’t have to remove the driveline from the transfer case just lift it up out of your way, that way there won’t be that little mess of transmission fluid to deal with.

Step 2:  Grab your drill and drill bit and drill out the holes for the u-bolts. If you use some kind of light oil on the holes it will make the drilling process go a little faster and your drill bit won’t get dull as quickly.

Step 3:  With the holes drilled you’re ready to install the u-bolts once they are installed your done! Looks a little stronger don’t you think? I haven’t done this to the front driveline yet but that is next and as soon as I do I will let you all know everything involved.

Good luck

Mike Hill.
